B&E Goulandris Foundation Art Internship in Athens

Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece (CHS Greece) seeks a Harvard Graduate student from the Graduate School of Arts & Science to work as an intern at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation in Athens, Greece. This program is meant to encourage art education through an interdisciplinary approach and extend the intern’s practical knowledge of museum programming and research.

Representatives from the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation will provide an in-depth induction about the modern art museum, the collection and its history, and the intern will gain valuable experience in the day to day running of the foundation through a strongly collaborative and hands-on approach, conducting research while developing an educational program or project over a five-week period. This experience will focus on developing a new education initiative, resulting in the establishment of either a new applied program, seminar or educational space.

The intern will be asked to devise a concept based around an alternative interdisciplinary understanding of the visual arts, art history and theory, using specific artworks from the collection as a starting point and a source of inspiration. Through a research-based approach, the intern will be expected to formulate an educational workshop for children or for older students, who will be invited to attend a workshop and a talk at the foundation. This event will take place on the last weekend of the internship. The intern will get specialized knowledge about the artworks represented by the unique collection and will have the chance to participate in the existing educational program that runs during the week.

Before arrival in Athens, s/he will be able to liaise with the Foundation in order to plan how to benefit from the resources that the Foundation can provide and schedule any preliminary arrangements for the successful implementation of either an educational workshop program or seminar. The intern will be also able to conduct her/his research in the Foundation’s dedicated library which holds over 6,000 books and a wide range of catalogues, periodicals and other publications, as well as access to the online catalog and other rare publications.

For all the stages of the program the intern will be in contact with both CHS and B&E Goulandris Foundation supervisors. The Foundation may organize meetings with other like-minded individuals such as graduate students from the School of Fine Arts in Athens and key-holders. The intern will also have the chance to visit the Harvard international office in Greece, based in Nafplio, and interact with other participants from Harvard/CHS programs in Greece.

At the end of the program, the intern will submit a brief report and evaluation of her/his chosen project to B&E Goulandris Foundation and CHS.

Compensation and Accommodation

The summer internship program is fully supported by the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, which will cover international airfare, accommodation in Athens for the duration of the program and a weekly stipend of €150.

About the Foundation

Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation was designed from the onset to house its collection. The collection in Athens focuses on modern and contemporary art by Greek and foreign artists, including rare works by masters of the European avant-garde such as Cézanne, van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Degas, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Picasso, Braque, Léger, Miró, Giacometti, Balthus, and others, as well as works by distinguished Greek modern painters and sculptors including Parthenis, Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, Tsarouchis, Takis, Moralis, Tetsis and others. The building’s total surface area is 7,250 sq.m. and consists of 11 floors, five of which are underground. The exhibition areas cover a total of five floors. The underground floors host the library, the workshop space, which accommodates educational programs and art classes for children, as well as a state-of-the-art, which hosts several events, including lectures, conferences, screenings, performances, concerts and other artistic and scientific activities.

Eligibility

Any Harvard graduate student from the Graduate School of Arts & Science with the following academic backgrounds and interests are eligible to apply: Art History, Cultural/Heritage Management, Museum Studies, Digital Humanities.

Strong information technology skills are beneficial to this role, and some previous experience working with databases would be an advantage.
